Teaching Resources for the State of the Union Address
President Barack Obama presented the 2010 State of the Union address to Congress on January 27. Here are two resources to help with lessons related to the address.
- “Anticipating the State of the Union, January 2010” is a 7-minute report that looks at issues and themes President Obama will likely discuss in his address Wednesday, January 27, 2010. It also puts this current event into historical perspective. The feature (created by the.News for the.Gov), which includes lesson plans, transcripts, and “thought starter” questions, can be found at www.pbs.org/newshour/thenews. (On February 5, the.News will broadcast another feature, “Haiti: Rebuilding a Nation.”)
- “State of the Union Bingo,” created by The National Constitution Center, is a lesson plan to engage 7-12th grade students (as they watch the president’s annual address to Congress) in a fun and interactive way. Students examine the events and topics, as well as the president’s legislative plan for the coming year. The lesson plan, complete with Bingo cards, is free at www.constitutioncenter.org/education.
